In 2008-2009, Bumula District started promoting bananas as a viable alternative to tobacco. With the support of government extension services NALEP and World Bank funding, a community-based organization consisting of 32 farmers interested in banana production was created. The project advised the farmers on good farming practices, crop varieties and  provided loans to help them start. Farmers who benefited from the program were able to increase their earnings as well as send their children to school after starting with banana production
