Tobacco used to be the most important crop grown in the Motueka region, up until the mid-1980s, when the government removed legal mechanisms that supported local tobacco production, thereby making tobacco growing unviable for farmers.[1] Government grants helped growers shift to alternative activities and crops. Today, the most important crops grown in the Motueka region are now hops,[2] kiwis and apples.[3]
