Brown & Williamson has been a subsidiary of British American Tobacco. In 2004, the company was incorporated with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company to be Reynolds American.

Corresponding with the size of Brown & Williamson, British American Tobacco held 42.2% of the shares of Reynolds American. In January 2017, BAT bought the remaining shares of Reynolds American.
