Case Study Kenaf in Malaysia

This case study analyses the government-funded introduction of kenaf as an alternative to tobacco in Malaysia. Prompted by the ratification of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the coming into force of the ASEAN free trade agreement, the government restructured the tobacco sector.

The authors interviewed farmers in Kelantan and staff of the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board on the experiences with the alternative crop. Which steps have been crucial to introduce kenaf cultivation? What are the conditions requiured by the new plant and how is kenaf processed? Which changes do the farmers see in their daily life after switching to kenaf?
